Tip #1: Camera - The kind of camera you use could completely change the quality of your Mixtape Cover. So try and use the best camera you can, but of course if your on a budget at least try and use a phone with a decent camera quality. Even if your phone isn't that great I'm sure you know somebody that will take a few good pics of you with theirs.
Tip #2: Lighting - Always take your photos in a well lit area with lots of sunlight. If it's dark you might not get a very high quality image. And if you want the photo dark you could always edit the photo afterwards.
Tip #3: Filters - Adding filters to your photo will give it a more professional vibe. It's kind of like adding seasoning to your food, it's just going to come out better. Here's a cool website I use for filters and overlays - Pixlr-O-Matic
Tip #4: Keep It Simple - It's good to know your boundaries when doing graphics because you can easily go overboard and come off spammy, especially when you're not a professional graphic designer. So in this case simple is best. Just try to get your point across with your title as the main focus and your artist name small but noticeable.
Tip #5: Clean Fonts - A cheesy low quality font could kill your whole Mixtape Cover Design. So it's important to have some good looking fonts for your cover. I like to make the title big, bold, and centered with my name right above it with a different font to give it some style. Here's a site I use when adding fonts and shapes to my design - Pixteller
